It is about time our characters start getting a clue about the fact
that this case involves human cloning and I am not surprised to see who
the ones making this discovery are. Seong-joon's hinted poor health
takes a turn for the worse, leaving Deuk-cheon and Mi-rae hoping for his
recovery. Meanwhile, Jo-hye tightens her grip on the situation.
Now is a good time to meet our mystery players, but I am happy to see them remain mysterious for now. The fact that we are dealing with two clones and one original is thankfully confirmed and although we still have the shared memories to deal with, the series is not going off the deep pseudo-scientific end just yet. The original doctor's body is clearly important enough to keep and so I stand by my assumption of it containing valuable science.
Perhaps this is just my suspicion over Korean dramas' love of birth secrets talking, but I sincerely hope that the our clones' originator was not Mi-rae's (Seo Eun-su) father. That would get very awkward very quickly given the nice rapport she and Seong-joon (Yang Se-jong) have. I cannot help but become alarmed when the good ol' "I have a mystery parent" trope rears its usually ugly head in such shows. This is not a soap opera and it has enough on its plate already.
Looming makjang horrors aside, the Dramagods do listen sometimes and Jo-hye (Kim Jung-eun) is finally piecing things together. My curiosity about why she fights so hard to be powerful has returned and I can finally see her as a person again, rather than the threat of arrest in human form. I believe she will eventually be an ally, because we have been shown enough leniency on her part for her character to be tilting towards the good side. Perhaps she will realize that some things matter more than power.
The series also touches upon the fact that Deuk-cheon (Jeong Jae-yeong) and Seong-joon have not really bonded a lot aside from their common goals and I hope that this is a sign of more dramatic closeness later on. Seong-joon is already a pitiful enough character due to his own problems and being used as a database adds onto them. Deuk-cheon and Mi-rae are clearly nice people who understand this, so I hope to see them bond more.
Seong-hoon has had his share of being used as well and this new information of his abusive childhood might provide some interesting interactions with Soo-yeon (Lee Na-yoon). I am curious to see where the action of the series will go now that Seong-joon's health is critical. I think I have had enough of him as a punching bag and so has he.
"Duel" is directed by Lee Jong-jae, written by Kim Yoon-joo and features Jeong Jae-yeong, Kim Jung-eun, Yang Se-jong and Seo Eun-su.
