As Guseonwon's grip on everyone tightens, allied forces are starting
to make their move. Dong-cheol takes some drastic and dangerous measures
while our doubting cult follower gains an important position of power
near Sang-mi. Our heroine tries to openly resist one last time, but the
moment has come for her to try other methods as the outside world
chooses sides.
Apostle Kang (Park Ji-yeong)
has been developing into my favorite villain for a while. The fact that
she is not faking her faith is scarier than her being an informed
accomplice, yet even seeing her old life flash before her eyes through
Sang-mi's (Seo Ye-ji)
abuse only makes her crueler in her denial of having pushed her own
daughter to her death. Her leader is a formidable figure, but Kang is a
fascinating villain because of how human she is.
Kang is not the end of lousy parenthood here, however. If "Save Me"
has made something inescapably clear, it is the fact that not all those
who breed can be called parents; a bold, but brutally realistic
message. The parallels between Yong-min (Son Byung-ho) and Father Baek (Jo Sung-ha)
have always been there. Both men use lies and smiles to control, both
are sadistic. I would personally worry about Sang-hwan's (Taecyeon) safety at the hands of his father, should he go against the despot.
Not everyone is horrible here, however. Hong So-rin (Jeon Yeo-bin)
is not too far gone to see that something may be wrong and becoming
Sang-mi's aide will surely push her more. Sang-mi has been with the cult
for three years and she has been suffering a lot as of late. She knows
so much depends on her, so it is understandable that she would keep
trying to resist. So-rin has not suffered and she therefore has the
capacity to be tactful and gather information. The two could work well
together.
It is the outside help I worry about more, however. Dong-cheol (Woo Do-hwan)
has been a great candidate for undercover work, but also for a heroic
demise. We have a character who is too pure for the world he inhabits
and who is willing to suffer for others. I fear that Joon-goo's (Go Joon) words to the crucifix may be foreshadowing everyone's redemption through such an end.
As for Joon-goo himself, I do not know what his role in this story
will be by the end, but I hope it will be finding a balance between
having justice and protecting what good is left in oneself. I also hope
we see more of Dae-sik (Lee Jae-joon),
because he looks like someone with interesting thoughts. Will the two
let go of their respective goals to save a mutual friend?
"Save Me" is directed by Kim Seong-soo, written by Jeong Sin-gyoo and Jeong I-do-I and features Taecyeon, Seo Ye-ji, Jo Sung-ha and Woo Do-hwan.
