The past in "Master - God of Noodles"
is kind of like Gil-do; you never know when it will come back and bite
you. The killer of Da-hae's mother is revealed and obviously becomes the
episode's highlight, while Yeo-gyeong makes the mother of all
discoveries. In less dramatic developments, the formed love lines get a
little boost and the cooking competition is resolved. Also, Congressman
So Tae-seop adds to the pile of sass directed at Gil-do's fragile
facade.
The creators of this drama have a knack for giving viewers all the
information we need, but in a way that makes it easy to miss its
importance when presented. Of all the suspects I had in my list for the
murder, Dae-cheon (Choi Jong-won) never crossed my mind. Yet when I looked back, I noticed we had actually seen Da-hae's (Gong Seung-yeon) mother handing him Gil-do's (Jo Jae-hyeon) wanted poster. The creators space the appearances and mask the pivotal role of characters very masterfully.
Episode thirteen grants my wish to discover more of Gil-do, as he
admits to feeling his version of love for Da-hae's mother. I phrase it
this way, because it is clear that Gil-do does not function in a way
mentally average people do. I am sure his feelings are intense, but I
also suspect the reasons behind them are unique and twisted. She sought
his punishment and that is very telling of their relationship dynamics.
Speaking of relationships, Tae-ha (Lee Sang-yeob) and Da-hae get an alcohol-fueled kiss, while Myeong (Cheon Jeong-myeong) and Yeo-gyeong (Jeong Yoo-mi)
finally stop fighting alone. I am not sure if they have romantic
feelings, but it does not really matter. Our makeshift family needs to
reunite. I hope they can approach Tae-ha as well. He clearly loves them
and seeing him get angry at Myeong over Da-hae does not worry me. His
loyalty is not black and white.
There are so many big things happening, but I am also curious about some supporting characters. We know Hyeon-jeong (Son Yeo-eun) is Congressman So's (Kim Byeong-gi) spy, so we might not see much of her from now on. However, what about chef Lee Gi-baek (Cha Do-jin) or Prosecutor Ahn (Choi Byeong-mo)?
What about Myeong's spy in Goongrakwon? I suppose the writer's love for
characters resurfacing means we will probably know more about them
soon.
Congressman So clearly knows everything about Gil-do, but his
eagerness to mess with him is so satisfying to watch. Now that Dae-cheon
has passed away, everyone will be after Goongrakwon and the battle will
be ruthless. The episode closes with Da-hae getting her answers and so
her trajectory becomes yet another worry. As for Myeong, I do not think
he will be caught, but that is the least of our dangers. Boy, are they
many.
"Master - God of Noodles" is directed by Kim Jong-yeon and Lim Se-joon, written by Chae Seung-dae and features Cheon Jeong-myeong, Jo Jae-hyeon, Jeong Yoo-mi and Lee Sang-yeob.
